Outdoor rooms are as popular as ever, and the line between indoors and out is becoming blurrier all the time. In these New Zealand gardens, created by the winners of Landscaping New Zealand’s 2016 Landscapes of Distinction Awards, there’s an outdoor version of every room in the house. Which ideas can you apply to make your backyard more inviting?
Together Yet Alone
Christchurch-based Goom Landscapes uses the word “lifescapes” to sum up what its landscape designers try to achieve in every project: outdoor rooms that extend your living space, enhance your home’s functionality and style, and add value in the process. The New Zealand landscaping professionals group awarded this project both best design of the year and landscape of the year.
Design elements of the house repeat in the garden, linking the two spaces. The wide pavers echo the dimensions of the house, for example. And there’s a spa built into the patio, seen to the right in this photo. This barbecue area is set up well for entertaining, with seating for guests plus plenty of counter space for drinks and nibbles. read more at houzz.com
